We Do Mission-Work

Company Mission Statement

Perez Therapy's mission-work is providing high-quality, accessible mental health care while fostering a supportive and enriching workplace for our providers. Grounded in social work principles of service, social justice, competence, and diversity, we strive to meet the needs of our communities through affirming and culturally competent therapy.

All are welcome at Perez Therapy. Our providers are highly skilled professionals and can work with a variety of people and issues.  But our mission-work focuses on communities of color, queer and trans individuals and families, ensuring language access for Spanish speakers, and supporting our providers with strong clinical supervision and guidance to help them thrive.

Perez Therapy Mission-Work

Perez Therapy engages in the following missions through our work with clients and the communities we serve. Our providers are trained in a variety of treatment methods, and some of our provider specialize with a target group individuals.

Our missions are as follows:

In-Person Therapy

For all its devastation, the pandemic ushered in an era of remote work and virtual therapy.  The ease of virtual appointments and work from home made therapy more accessible to individuals.  While there are no studies (yet) of the long-term effectiveness of Telehealth, research supports the effectiveness of virtual therapy for many counseling issues.

But for some people, in-person therapy is a preferred way to do the work, and that's ok! We love our office, and you will too.  Although some practices are able to be successful with having a virtual-only practice, we offer in-person therapy to continue to promote the positive healing experience of in-person therapy.

Communities of Color

Naming the practice "Perez Therapy" was an intentional statement promoting the presence of Latinidad in the mental health in Philadelphia.  When founding Perez Therapy, Felix wanted for Latinos and other communities of color to feel immediately welcome and by giving the practice his family name, the name Perez Therapy communicates "we are you".

LGBTQIA+ Individuals and Families

Our founder, Felix, came out in 1997 just like Ellen, "Yep, I'm gay," and in 1999 he helped start a gay-straight alliance at Northeast High School with the Ally Safe Schools Network. He then joined the board of GLSEN-Philadelphia and while getting a Bachelor of Social Work at Temple University, he worked at Attic Youth Center as a youth peer educator. Later he worked at GALAEI first as a health education specialist and then as a board member.   While a student at the University of Pennsylvania's Master of Social Work program, he was a graduate intern at Penn's LGBT Center, where he wrote and successfully acquired a grant for a create the David Bonnett Cyber Center at the University of Pennsylvania in 2006. For over 20 years, Felix has been an advocate, leader, social worker and clinician in the LGBTQIA+ community, working to ensure access to queer and trans affirming care and community support.

Many of the Perez Therapy providers are queer, trans and gender variant.  Our straight/cis providers are compassionate allies for our LGBTQIA+ clients as well.  Whether you want a LGBTQ-identified provider or not, all our providers are affirming and dedicated to supporting you authentically in your care.

Spanish Speakers

Spanish-speaking therapists with skilled training are difficult to achieve, and Spanish is spoken in 11% of Philadelphia households according to the US Census. Perez Therapy hopes to support Spanish-speaking providers so that they can provide Latinos with quality clinical care.

Coming from a Puerto Rican family, one with multiple members living in Philadelphia, Felix grew up in predominantly Puerto Rican and Black neighborhoods in Eastern North Philadelphia.  He grew up in a bilingual family and community, with rich history in Philadelphia.  Felix is one of the few therapists in the  Greater Philadelphia area working with Latino individuals, families and couples in Spanish.  Felix's mission is to increase access to high-quality bilingual therapy for more Latinos in the Greater Philadelphia area.

Medicaid

Felix comes from a family of social workers, nurses, educators and other health professionals who have worked with Philadelphia's communities of color.  After Felix led a career in the nonprofit sector as a social worker, therapist and behavioral health executive, he founded Perez Therapy to create access to quality mental health therapy for a greater number of Philadelphians. Joining the Medicaid network with Community Behavioral Health (CBH)The alliance with CBH amplifies Perez Therapy's commitment to providing premier mental health care across the Greater Philadelphia area.

CBH/Medicaid members receive high-quality and free mental health services at Perez Therapy. Virtually or in-person, members work with well-trained and compassionate clinicians.  Perez Therapy provides close clinical supervision and training to its providers to support communities with the most need for compassionate care.

Training New Clinicians

Our mission is not just about our clients, but it's about our providers as well.  When providers join the Perez Therapy community, they join a community of providers who are mission-driven. To support our providers clinical growth, Perez Therapy offers intensive clinical supervision, consultation and training opportunities to their providers to support the clients they work with.

 What's your mission?

As leader of the practice, Felix brings 20 years of experience in providing therapy to adultsd, teens and children.  He invests in the professional growth of each therapist at Perez Therapy and meets with them regularly to support them in providing quality psychotherapy to our clients.

Our therapists have their own unique styles, but our work is rooted in evidenced-based approaches that work.  We don't waste people's time discussing problems with no results.  Our approach prioritizes finding solutions together in a collaborative way.  Sometimes our clients want advice and other times they just need to find a path that works best for them. Either way, we are there to help. You are at the helm here, and we help you hold yourself accountable for the goals you want to achieve.
